One lifehack I keep coming back to: if you pay for things priced in foreign currency — AI subscriptions included — paying with crypto is often much cheaper and much faster. Crypto isn't only for trading. It can also be a genuinely efficient way to move money.
The problem with banks and SWIFT
A normal bank transfer over SWIFT can take two to three days to land. The fee is usually around $25 (roughly Rp400k), and that's before you factor in the exchange rate, which is rarely in your favor once you add the spread, the markup, and the FX fee.
With crypto, the same transfer can finish in under ten minutes. Even for something as large as Rp1 billion, the network fee can come out to less than Rp1,000 depending on the chain. Personally I lean toward the Base L2 network so far — it just feels faster to me.
Web3 has practical uses, not just hype
I used to see Web3 mostly through the hype lens: trading, hackathons, smart contracts, the occasional digital product. What I didn't expect was how practical blockchain can be for everyday life. Cross-border payments turned out to be one of the clearest examples.
Why is it cheaper?
It isn't always classic arbitrage. The more accurate reason is that the price of USDT on local exchanges tends to sit closer to the real USD market rate. International cards, on the other hand, usually carry a Visa/Mastercard spread, a bank markup, and an FX fee of around 1–3%.
The speed gap is just as wide. Sending USDT over networks like Base, Mantle, Solana, or Polygon usually settles in seconds to a few minutes. Compare that to SWIFT, which can take one to five business days.
Fees follow the same pattern. A crypto transfer might cost anywhere from Rp500 to Rp10k depending on the network, while SWIFT can run $10–$50, not counting intermediary bank fees and the exchange-rate difference. For international payments, this is one of the most tangible benefits of crypto I've felt.
The flow I use
It's simpler than it sounds:
- Buy USDT on a crypto exchange like Bitget using rupiah.
- Top up a payment card that supports crypto — for example RedotPay, Wirex, or Reap.
- Use the card to pay for whatever you need: OpenAI, Claude, and the rest.
That's it. Same subscription, less money spent, and it clears in minutes instead of days.
